Eagles fall just short against 7th-ranked Millers

Noblesville — The Zionsville softball team has shown they can hang with some of the top teams in the state.

The goal now becomes winning one of the close games.

The Eagles gave seventh-ranked Noblesville everything they could handle Friday night, but ultimately fell 7-5 in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.

After the game, Zionsville head coach Lori Esparza wasn’t going to take any moral victories.

“I think we can do much better,” Esparza said. “To lose the game because of two bad innings is unfortunate, especially coming off mental errors. But our girls are learning every game and it is a process.”

Noblesville struck first in the second inning scoring four runs.

Ashley Cleverly led off with a single and advanced to second on an error.

Zoe Schafer reached on an error and Megan Montgomery loaded the bases when she reached on a bunt.

Aly Compton followed with a single to center that plated two.

A mental error by the Eagles allowed another run to score on a fielders’ choice and Noblesville scored its final run on a ground out by Hannah DeSalvo.

Zionsville got a run back in the top of the third, when Alex Stewart singled home Bri Wagner to make the score 4-1.

The Eagles continued to chip away in the fifth.
