Seniors help pace Stars to win against Warriors

Dover — The Western Boone baseball team honored their seniors the best way they could Tuesday evening.

The Stars scored two runs in the fifth and held on to beat Danville 2-1.

“It feels good to get a win for them,” Western Boone head coach Dave Sloan said. “I am very proud of the three seniors that we have. They have worked hard all year and focused in. They have set a bar for the next group that is coming in that is pretty high.”

Both teams had runners in scoring position in the early innings but couldn’t score.

The first tally came in the top of the fourth inning. Danville got back-to-back one out singles to put runners on the corners.

Alex Bilyeu hit a high pop up that the Western Boone defense misjudged and let fall in the infield, allowing a run to score.

Tyler Squibb prevented the damage after that, retiring nine in a row.

“We have tightened up a lot on our defense,” Sloan said. “Early in the year it was more that we weren’t getting the timely hits like we did today. Last year, we would have potentially fallen apart when that ball landed, but we have grown there this year.”

Western Boone left runners on second and third in the fourth inning, but after a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, the Stars made the most of their chances in the fifth.
