Stars end season with 2-0 loss

Greencastle — The Western Boone girls soccer team knew they had a tough draw on their hands when they drew conference champion Tri-West in the opening round of the Greencastle Sectional.

The Stars hung with the Bruins as long as they could, but ultimately fell 2-0 to end their season.

“I just told the girls that I was really proud all season long with their effort,” Western Boone head coach Jennifer Fisher said. “The effort is always there; they are a very hardworking group. They handle themselves well and today was a very competitive game.”

It was the second-straight season the two teams met up in the sectional.

Last year the Bruins won the game 5-0. Tri-West won the regular season meeting 3-0 this year.

Fisher said that while her team lost, she can see her team’s becoming more competitive with the perennial conference powers.

“I think the gap has narrowed,” Fisher said. “We weren’t too upset to see them worst. I don’t think they were too happy with the draw either; I feel like we were one of the stronger teams in the sectional. But you have to go through the best to be the best. We knew we would have to go through them at some point.”

Tri-West got a first-half goal from Gabby Edwards and a second-half goal from Lauren DeSutter in the game.

While the Bruins controlled the ball for a majority of the game, the Stars did a good job of limiting their serious scoring chances.

“The defense – I just can’t say enough about them,” Fisher said. “It is an entire team effort, but especially our back four and our keeper, they are just very, very solid. I am not sure what it will be after today but our goals against average is 1.01 for the season and any time you can do that it is a successful season.”
