Eagles hand Stars first loss

Western Boone and Zionsville's volleyball teams both came into Tuesday night's Boone County showdown with unblemished records in the 2013 season. It was the host Eagles who would leave the gym still unbeaten, topping the Class 3A No. 13 Stars 25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23 to improve to 4-0 on the season. "Last night we didn't show up early," Zionsville head coach Dawn Jones said, referencing the Eagles' come-from-behind five-game win against North Montgomery. "We came in tonight knowing what we had to do. We especially wanted to work on the things we didn't do well last night. We served very well tonight. Our block and our defense kept us in games. We were able to break their serve receive a couple of times and offensively we were able to get everyone involved and really spread our offense." Western Boone head coach Laura Lawson said that she hopes, and expects, her girls to learn from this setback and become a better team because of it. "Our schedule is really tough, so I didn't expect to go undefeated," Lawson said. "I told the girls that this season is going to be a journey. We are going to learn from our mistakes, so why not learn from a good team like Zionsville." Game one was a back-and-forth battle. Neither team led by more than three points the entire game and there were seven ties in the game. Trailing 22-20, Western Boone came back to tie the game at 23 on a block by Emily Harrison, but Zionsville won the final two points to take game one.
