Stars fall in shootout (3-0) on senior night

It was a tough ending for the Western Boone girls soccer team seniors on their Senior Night Wednesday against Crawfordsville. After being tied at 1 through regulation and two seven-minute overtimes, the game went to a shootout. There the Athenians made all three of their kicks, while the Stars missed all three of theirs and lost 1-1 (3-0 PKs). "There was a lot of effort, a lot of energy, a lot of sweat left on the field and even a little blood," Western Boone head coach Jen Foxworthy said. "The effort was definitely there. I told the girls, and I truly believe this, a PK shootout is one of the toughest things in sports. It is a really stressful and hard for anyone in it. But the effort was there, it was just one lapse that allowed them to tie the game." The Stars first two shooters in the shootout, Julia Hole and Maeve Dugan had their shots saved by the Crawfordsville goalkeeper. The third Western Boone shooter, Camryn Savage missed her shot to the left of the goal. Reilly Dunham, Krystyn Flynn and Emily Cullen all made their shots for Crawfordsville. "Once we got in the shootout we didn't perform as well we would have liked," Foxworthy said. "I take some of the blame in that. We have been playing so many games lately that we haven't had many practices and it was something we should have put a little more time into in practice." This was the first shootout for the Stars this season. For more of this story, read Thursday's Lebanon Reporter.
