Strong fourth quarter pushes WeBo boys past Tri-West

Lizton — Nothing seemed to go the Western Boone Stars way in the first three quarters of they Sagamore Conference opener at Tri-West.

But then in a blink of an eye, it seemed like nothing could go wrong. The Stars started the fourth quarter on an 18-3 run and topped the Bruins 65-57.

“I am really proud of our kids,” Western Boone head coach Scott McClelland said. “Just extremely proud of them. They showed some real toughness, some real heart. It is what we have been talking about all year long and they showed it tonight.”

The Stars trailed by one after a quarter, and trailed 21-19 with 4:30 left in the half when C.J. McMann picked up his third foul.

Western Boone responded with an 8-0 run to take a 27-21, but during the run L.V. Bowden became the second Star to pick up his third foul.

With two-fifths of the Stars’ line-up on the bench in foul trouble, Tri-West closed the half on a 12-0 run to lead 33-27 at the break.

Despite trailing, McClelland felt like the Stars were in a good position at the half.

“At halftime my frustration wasn’t our defense or our effort, it was our silly turnovers,” McClelland said. “I mean we threw it to everyone in the gym — I think my daughter caught a pass. Credit Tri-West, but I thought we got in such a rush and in panic mode. We were up four with like a 1:25 and then we got sped up, lost our composure a little bit. I told them at halftime that we were in control of the game with L.V. and C.J. on the bench. Credit Tri-West; they made some plays and made it difficult on us, we just had to quit turning it over. We made some plays. I thought at halftime we were in good shape, we just had to stop turning it over, play a little harder and things were going to go our way — and they did.”
