Western Boone girls take bite out of Bruins

Lizton — The Western Boone Lady Stars knew they had a tough challenge on their hands in the Sagamore Conference opener at Tri-West Friday night.

The Bruins came in with a 5-0 record and the sixth-best scoring average in Class 3A, at 63.4 points a game. But the Stars clamped down on defense when they needed to and topped Tri-West 47-43.

“It wasn’t pretty, but I’m concerned about that because the only mission was to come over here and get the ‘W,’” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “Quite honestly, we need to be tested like that. This is a tough place to play and this was a big game — they were 5-0 and we were 5-1. They were rolling right along, and there was a lot of things that we had to do well to win. We didn’t do everything well, but our kids needed to be tested like this because we haven’t been in these kinds of situations. The more situations we get in like this, the better off we will be.”

One of the keys was the job Western Boone did on Bruin guard Lauren DeSutter.

DeSutter came into the game averaging 23.0 points a game, fourth best in Class 3A. The Stars held her to seven, including only one in the second half.

“With Tri-West it is really pick your poison with them because they have kids that can score,” Schelsky said. “We knew if we kept DeSutter well under her average that we would have a good chance to win. Kaitlin Miller did a great job chasing her all night and our kids did a great job forcing her left when she got the ball. We didn’t lose her much and you have to give all the credit for knowing the game plan and executing it.”
