Tigers claim Twin Lakes Invite title

Monticello — The Twin Lakes Invitational hasn’t always been kind to the Lebanon Lady Tigers basketball team.

After winning the title in 2006, the Tigers achieved just a 5-10 record the next five years. That all changed Friday.

The Tigers avenged an earlier loss to Western with a 22-point win in the semifinal and hammered the host Indians 72-52 in the championship game to take home the title.

“It is great,” Lebanon head coach Beth DeVinney said. “We talked about it since I came here. I have watched the girls (when she coached at Seymour) in this tournament and kind of fizzle out in the second game and not really get the job done. It was something I was on them really hard about because I feel like it is a builder for the sectional and regional. It is one of those things that it is a great holiday tournament, it is great to get a win at and it is good to see where you are in terms of conditioning.”

Twin Lakes came out on fire, taking an 18-11 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter by hitting 6-of-8 3-pointers.

But the Tigers closed the first quarter on a 6-0 spurt to get within one, and pushed the run out to 26-3 to grab a 37-21 lead with three minutes left in the first half.

DeVinney liked the composure the girls showed after falling behind early.

“Our kids are pretty steady, that don’t really freak out about much,” DeVinney said. “A lot of teams can get really shook by things that happen to them and our girls aren’t like that. I am confident in our girls. Twin Lakes hit 12 3-pointers and that is something that was ugly for us; we lost their shooters a lot. It is something we have focused on and it is something we have to get better at.”

The Tigers led by 15 at halftime and after Twin Lakes cut it to 10 by scoring the first five points of the second half, Lebanon put the game away with a 14-0 run to go up 57-33.

The lead was never below 20 in the fourth quarter.
