WeBo girls end regular season with 20-point win

Dover — Because Lebanon finished an undefeated conference season last Friday, the Western Boone Lady Stars knew they couldn’t win the Sagamore Conference title.

But they could still play for pride. The Stars topped Crawfordsville 58-38 to finish the regular season 14-6 and 6-1 in the Sagamore Conference.

“This is the third year in a row that we are 6-1 in the conference, so we are 18-3 in the last three years and that is nothing to hang your head about,” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “We would like to win it here eventually, it is obviously not our goal to finish second, but I still think it is a big accomplishment. Because of where the Lebanon game falls with it being our second conference game, and to drop it the last three years and still win five in a row to finish 6-1, I am proud of our kids. They want to win and it can be hard playing for second place. We aren’t content with that, but to finish with that record says a lot about our kids.”

The Stars led 12-11 with 2:51 left in the first quarter, and extended the lead with a 12-0 run to take a 24-11 lead with 5:36 left in the half.

Schelsky said the Stars did a good job of switching defenses and keeping the Athenians off-balance.

“Really for most of the night we used a 1-3-1, which is our bread and butter, and we did a good job of that,” Schelsky said. “We used a 2-3 zone which was good and early on we used some triangle and two, which I don’t think they have seen a lot of and were confused. The forced some shots in that stretch. We are going to win with defense, and to be playing some of our best defense down the stretch is good sign.”
