No. 1 Tigers survive WeBo’s upset bid

Lebanon — The Western Boone Lady Stars gave the Class 3A No. 1 Lebanon Lady Tigers all they could handle and then some Wednesday night in the Sectional 25 quarterfinals at Lebanon.

But in the end, the Tigers were able to make enough free throws down the stretch to defeat Western Boone 51-49 in overtime to advance to Friday night’s sectional semifinal against Crawfordsville.

“You couldn’t ask for a better sectional game,” Lebanon head coach Beth DeVinney said. “Obviously it is not the way we wanted it to go, but nonetheless it is the way we wanted it to end up. You always say in the tournament you need a little bit of luck, and hopefully this is not our only lucky occurrence tonight.”

It was the second time this season that Western Boone hung right with the top team in the class.

In December, the Tigers won by eight, but the Stars were up by 10 late in the third quarter.

“No. 1, I am really proud of the effort our kids gave,” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “I think we exceeded a lot of people’s expectations throughout the course of the season, given what we lost from the year before, but I know we exceeded about 2,500 people’s expectations for this ball game. If you really want to slice it down, if we don’t make 29 turnovers — that is the only place in the game they out-played us in. We out-played them in every other aspect of the game. It is one of those things that it stinks to lose, we didn’t deserve to lose, they made one more bucket off of one of our turnovers and it ended up costing us.”

Western Boone led 31-26 late in the third quarter, but baskets by Carly Greene and Katie Curtis cut the Western Boone lead to one at the end of third quarter. Greene (nine points and eight rebounds) added the first bucket of the final quarter to give Lebanon the 32-31 lead.

After the game got tied at 34, Lebanon went on a 7-3 spurt to take a 42-37 lead with 50 seconds remaining on two Curtis’ free throws.
