Robert B. Howe

Robert B. Howe, 86, Frankfort, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at his home.

He was born Aug. 14, 1921, in Tippecanoe County to Raymond and Mae (Keller) Howe. He married Margaret “Peggy” Messmore on Dec. 3, 1943, in Clinton County, and she preceded him in death in 1999.

Bob Howe was a graduate of Frankfort High School and played an active part in organizing the reunions for the Class of 1940. He worked at Alcoa in Lafayette from 1941-1952, and worked for and retired from the Frankfort Fire Department from 1952-1979, where he was assistant chief under Albert Nichols. He also worked for Chromecraft Furniture for Harold Stewart and at Marsh from 1999-2005 as a utility clerk. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served as Staff Sergeant during World War II from 1942 to 1946. Bob’s memberships include St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, VFW, American Legion, Frankfort FOP, 50-year member of Clinton Masonic Lodge and Clinton Country Promenaders Square Dance Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Christine Ann) Underwood of Geneva, Ala. and Mrs. Larry (Beverly R.) Strain of Gosport, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by infant twin sons, an infant sister and a brother, Paul E. Howe.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Goodwin Funeral Home, 200 S. Main St., Frankfort. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. Jean Brindel will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Bunnell Cemetery.
