Wayne L. Smith

Mr. Wayne L. Smith, 92, of Zionsville, died August 23, 2008.

Mr. Smith was born Dec. 31, 1915, to the late John and LuVera (Dulin) Smith in Boone County. He graduated from Zionsville High School in 1933.

He married his wife of 52 years, Thelma Starkey, on Feb. 5, 1944.

Mr. Smith retired in 1991, after more than 68 years of farming. Together with his son Brent, he farmed 7500 acres and raised hogs and cattle.

He was a life member of Zionsville Christian Church. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of REMC (Boone County) for 18 years. He also helped start Soil and Water Conservation in Boone County. Mr. Smith was a 63-year member of Charles Frank Lodge No. 760, a former chairman of Farm Bureau of Eagle Township and a member of the 4-H Fair Board.

Mr. Smith is survived by his son, E. Brent Smith and his wife Tricia; his sister, Deleda Montgomery; daughter-in-law, Carol O. Smith; grandchildren, Jerry E. Smith, Mandy L. Kerr, Kevin E. Smith, Rebecca S. Wick, Rachel S. Derksen, Broden C. Smith, Cody G. Smith; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; children, Wanda L., James W. and L. Eugene Smith; brothers, George, Kenneth, Esta and Earl Smith; and sisters, Florence Self and Eunice Smith.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. 9th St., Zionsville, with a Masonic memorial service following the calling. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Hutton Cemetery.
