Barbara Jean Whitinger

Mrs. Barbara Jean Whitinger, 91, of Thorntown, died Monday, April 15, 2013, at her residence.

Mrs. Whitinger was born, one of six children, to the now late Chester H. and Blanche (Hester) Crow, on Aug. 7, 1921, in Aurora. She was a 1939 graduate of Rossville High School.

On Aug. 6, 1944, she married Raymond Elvin Whitinger in Colfax. Mr. Whitinger passed away Feb. 3, 1999.

Mrs. Whitinger worked as a sales clerk for Adler’s in Frankfort from 1960 to 1975. For many years, she helped her husband with the family farm. They retired in 1975 and moved to Bradenton, Fla. There, both she and her husband worked for Belk department store. When her husband passed away, Mrs. Whitinger moved back to Indiana.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Whitinger enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her interests included quilting, knitting, making cards, and participating in activities at the Thorntown Library.

She was a member of United Methodist Church of Thorntown.

Survivors include three children, Suellen M. (Gene) Denny and William F. (Diana) Whitinger, all of Thorntown, and Richard R. (Sara) Whitinger of Warsaw; six grandchildren, Amanda (Brian) Wiley, Patrick (Kristi) Denny, Amy Whitinger, Drew (Nichole) Whitinger, Brent (Paula) Mathews and Cary (Beth) Mathews; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Barbara was preceded in death by a son, Robert M. Whitinger; three brothers, Cedric Crow, Modlyth Crow and Max Crow; and two sisters, Jule Durnbaugh and Bonita Gackenheimer.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Chaplain Gary Scott officiating. Interment will follow at Plainview Cemetery in Colfax.
