James Merton “Jim” Pierce

Mr. James Merton “Jim” Pierce, 77, of Lebanon, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon.

Jim was born July 14, 1935, in Indianapolis. He was the son of the now late Edward Merton and Emma Mae (Kesler) Pierce.

He attended Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. After school he joined the United States Navy and served his country for 21 years, retiring in 1972 as a Chief Petty Officer.

Jim married Luella Mae Perkins on Sept. 7, 1974, in Indianapolis.  Mrs. Pierce survives.

After retiring from the navy, Jim moved back to central Indiana and worked for Allison Transmission in Speedway. He then worked for Thorntown Elementary school as a maintenance supervisor for 14 years. For the last 15 years he was the property manager in Lebanon for Professional Properties.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Jim enjoyed his grandchildren. He also enjoyed camping with his family, as well as the Royal Ranger ministries. For 35 years he participated in Boy’s Ministries, and for 10 years he was the state/district commander.

He was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lebanon, Frontier Camping Fellowship for 35 years, and  Royal Rangers.

Survivors include his wife, Luella M. Pierce of Lebanon; three sons, Jeff L. (Michelle) Woodard of Lebanon, Greg L. (Sue) Woodard of Pittsboro and Mark M. (Katy) Pierce of Lebanon; brother, Richard “Dick” (Dottie) Pierce of Brownsburg; and seven grandchildren, Justin Woodard, Allison Woodard, Aidan Woodard, Haley Pierce, Hannah Pierce, Nikolas Pierce and Caitlin Pierce.

He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew J. Pierce; and a sister, Jean Short.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 2, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Pastor Merv McNair officiating. Interment with military rites will follow at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Whitestown.
