Ralph Hughes

Ralph Hughes, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, in Lafayette. Born in Darlington on Dec. 31, 1922, Mr. Hughes was 90 years old, just four days shy of 91.

He was the son of Albert and Harriet Peterson Hughes of Covington.

He is survived by his wife Vivian Kincaid Hughes, and four children: Danny (wife Kathy Dodd Hughes) of Champaign, Ill.; Teri Fella (husband Alan) of Zionsville; Janene Greer (husband Richard), of Decatur, IL; and Becky Winger (husband Roland) of Lafayette. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Martin, who died at birth. He graduated from Covington High School in 1941 and worked as a typesetter at Donnelley’s in Crawfordsville after high school.

He married Vivian Kincaid of Mechanicsburg in 1944, and they enjoyed life together for 69 years. They moved to Minneapolis in 1945, where he worked as a circulation district manager for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune until 1951.

After briefly running the circulation department of the Logansport Pharos-Tribune and the Logansport Press newspapers, he moved to Indianapolis, where he worked in the circulation department of the Indianapolis Star-News. He started there in 1951 and retired in 1987. He served first as a district manager, then as a supervisor of district managers, and then as the city circulation director.

After retiring, he and Vivian moved to Lafayette, where he worked for five years in the circulation department of the Lafayette Journal-Courier.

Ralph was an avid sports fan. He loved the Cubs and Purdue. He was quite a pool shark, having learned to play in the billiard parlor his father ran in Covington, and he loved playing dominoes, cards, board games and Scrabble.
