Mary Lou Quandt Averitt

Mary Lou Quandt Averitt, 83, of Zionsville, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis.

Mary was born Dec. 4, 1929, to William Omer and Mildred Patterson Quandt in Chester, Pa. Her parents preceded her in death, as did her brothers, Robert Quandt, Don Quandt and Paul Quandt; grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Menchhofer and Michael Forrest Fitzpatrick; and her beloved husband, Forrest I. Averitt, whom she wed Aug. 27, 1949.

Mary Lou was a 1948 graduate of Shortridge High School, a nurse for more than 15 years, and a nanny for over 25 years. She is remembered for her spirited sense of humor (especially on April Fool’s Day), avid love of camping and spending time with children and her dogs.

After her husband of 45 years passed on March 4, 1994, she enjoyed shopping, daily outings at McKamey’s Village Pharmacy with the group of lunch friends, and driving her Red VW Bug. When her health failed, she moved into her daughter Nancy’s home for a number of years.

Mary is survived by her sons, Larry Averitt and Tom (Theresa) Averitt; her daughters, Linda (Wayne) Biggs, Della (Owen) Menchhofer, Carol (Scott) Robbins and Nancy (Robert) Fitzpatrick. Her surviving grandchildren are Adam and Aaron Biggs; Nick, Rachel and Jessica Averitt; Jacob and Matthew Menchhofer; Courtney Syester and Danielle Syester Lundgren; Holly Fitzpatrick; and Will and Kaitlyn Averitt; and eight great-grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are brothers, Charles ‘Bud,’ Herb, Phil, William and John Quandt; and her sisters, Betty Clark and Shirley Smith.

A graveside service will be held for family and close friends at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at Zionsville Cemetery, Zionsville Road and W. 106th Street, Zionsville. A celebration of life will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post 79, 9950 E. 600 S, Zionsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Hospice, 8450 N. Payne Road, Indianapolis, IN  46268.
