---- — Mr. Wayne E. Smith, 78, of Lebanon, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014, at St. Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis.

Wayne was born in Zionsville, on Oct. 5, 1935, a son of the now late Miley Martin and Marie Minnie (Wiggam) Smith. Raised and educated in Zionsville, Wayne graduated from Zionsville High School in 1953.

On Aug. 9, 1980, he was married to Schella M. Gottfried at Sue and Al Fields’ home in Lebanon. Mrs. Smith survives.

Wayne was a truck driver for Taylor Oil Company for 15 years. He later became a mechanic, and worked for various companies such as Pittman Moore and Dow Chemical. He retired from Shell Oil Company on Nov. 22, 1992.A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Wayne enjoyed his family and grandchildren. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, hunting and fishing.

He was a member of Hope Community Church in Lebanon.

Survivors include his wife, Schella M. Smith of Lebanon; six children, Michael E. (Rhondalyn) Smith of Lebanon, Robert “Mitch” (Dianna) Smith of Markleville, Martin K. “George” (companion, Melissa) Smith of Sheridan, Bambi Coates of Newport News, Va., Sue Smith of Sheridan and Tina Marie Smith of Cicero; three stepchildren, Mike Barrett and Tammy Snell, both of Mooresville, and Chris Willhite of Portland; one sister, Betty J. (Glen) Horlacher of Thorntown; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, John Smith, Dick Smith, Ralph Smith and Keith Smith; a sister, Faye E. Smith; and a son, Mark L. Smith.

Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Pastor Bill Watts officiating. Interment will follow services at Hutton Cemetery, east of Whitestown.
