Jane Ann Pickering

Jane Ann (Shera) Pickering, 95, of Lebanon and formerly of rural New Ross, peacefully passed away March 27, 2014.

Born on Dec. 25, 1918, in Boone County, Jane Ann was the only child of James Bertram Shera and Gertha Ann (Riggins) Shera.

Until moving to an assisted living apartment in Lebanon in 2005, Jane Ann married, raised a family and lived in her childhood home near New Ross.

In 1936, Jane Ann graduated from Advance High School. She attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill.

In 1940, she married Walter B Pickering, a grain and livestock farmer, who preceded her in death on their 70th wedding anniversary on Aug. 25, 2010.

They had two children, James Bruce and Judith Ann.

Throughout her life, Jane Ann excelled at cooking and sewing. She grew her own vegetables on the family farm and made dresses for her granddaughters.

Additionally, she volunteered as a Gray Lady at Witham Hospital for 25 years. Jane Ann was a member of the Modern Maids Home Economics Club and Centenary United Methodist Church in Lebanon.

Survivors include her son, Jim Pickering of Indianapolis and her daughter, Judy (Scott) Skjordahl of Jacksonville, Fla.; granddaughters, Michelle (Rick) Forsythe of Byhalia, Miss.; Jennifer (Tom) Stanton of Jacksonville, Fla.; Kara Pickering of Indianapolis; Amy Skjordahl of Seattle, Wash.; and Ashley Skjordahl of Denver, Colo.; seven great-grandchildren, Reagan and Rex Forsythe, Katie and Sarah Stanton and Luke, Jake and Gracie Cromer; and sister-in-law, Helen Young of Huntington.

She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Barbara Pickering.

The family is thankful for the dedicated caregivers at CrownPointe Assisted Living.

Family and friends will gather from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, for visitation and services at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Jane Ann will be laid to rest at Old Union Cemetery near Jamestown.
