---- — Mrs. Mary Lou Elrod, 84, of Zionsville, passed away Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at her residence. Mary Lou was born in Plain City, Ohio, on June 12, 1929, a daughter of the now late Rush Laverne and Verna Mae (Page) Shanklin. A longtime resident of Boone County, she graduated from Whitestown High School. On Feb. 21, 1950, she married Quinton Roosevelt Elrod in Lebanon. He passed away on Sept. 11, 2011. The Elrods had celebrated 61 years of marriage together. In the early 1950s, Quinton and Mary Lou purchased Bel–Mar Products Corporation from Quinton’s siblings. Mary Lou was the secretary at their place of business for many years. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she always made sure her children and grandchildren were able to participate in and attend various activities. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and collecting dolls. Mary Lou was a member of Whitestown Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Whitestown. Survivors include four children, Victoria Elrod Applegate of Las Vegas, Nev., Cheryl Ann Lee of Whitestown, Teresa Louise Beesley of Indianapolis and Steven Quinton (Susan Tahereh) Elrod of Zionsville; brother, Clarence F. (Wanda) Shanklin of Lebanon; sister, Beverly (Jess) Eberwein of Ormond Beach, Fla.; brother-in-law, Bill Kersey of Lebanon; nine grandchildren, Clinton Scott McKinley, Brittany Rose Applegate-Hedrick, Heather Ann Lee-Swift, Melissa Kimberly Elrod-Schmidt, Brandon Day Applegate, Cassandra Louise Elrod, Robert Lester Beesley, Natalie Louise Beesley and Robert Dylan Lee; and six great-grandchildren, Gavin, Ashton, Simone, Scarlett, Drew and Elizabeth. Mrs. Elrod was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Shirley Kersey. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. A memorial service for Mr. and Mrs. Elrod will be held at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
