---- — Robert Leslie “Bob” Nelson was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Indianapolis. He died Sept. 19, 2013, in Leesburg, Fla., where he had been a resident since 2005. He is survived by his wife, Donna (Weaver) Nelson, whom he married on July 8, 1972; and his two daughters and sons-in-law, Erin and Robert Magill of Windermere, Fla., and Meagen and Paul Feigert of Zionsville. He is also survived by his brother, John “Jack” Nelson of Zionsville. Bob grew up in and was a resident of Lebanon until he retired to Florida in 2005. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1952, where he played football, after which he earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Ball State University. Bob then served his country as a 1st Lieutenant with the United States Marine Corps, from which he was honorably discharged as a captain in 1960. Upon returning to Indiana, Bob earned his Master’s Degree in education from Butler University. After working as a teacher for a time, Bob began working the Nelson Family farm with his mother, Alma Nelson, and his brother, Jack Nelson. While working on the family farm, Bob became quite active in the community of his hometown, joining The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, where he became a Life Member of Lodge #635. Bob was also active in the government of Boone County, serving one term as a Boone County Commissioner for District 3 in 1984, and as the Chairman of the Boone County Republican Party from 1989 until 2005. After decades of a successful farming career and serving his community, Bob retired to Florida in 2005, where he and Donna spent their time playing golf and vacationing with their children and many friends. An avid reader, Bob also enjoyed socializing, often spoiling his guests with his prolific cooking skills. A memorial service with Elks rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon.
