Marjorie L. Coleman

Marjorie L. Coleman, a woman devoted to her family, her faith and her community, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 at Homewood Health Campus, Lebanon. She was born July 29, 1918, in the “new” Witham Memorial Hospital, Lebanon, the eldest child of Amos and Lueva “Lula” Busby Gosnell and was graduated from Lebanon High School with the Class of 1936. Marjorie met the love of her life, Everett J. “E.J." Coleman, and the couple wed Feb. 17, 1943, in Lampufam Chapel at Columbia University, New York, N.Y. They were married for 68 years before his death in 2012. She spent her life making a home for her family and in the service of various organizations in her community. She and E.J. lived in a variety of states before returning “home” to Lebanon. She always felt it was important to volunteer and participate for the betterment of each community in which they lived, leaving a legacy of service. During her years in Lebanon, Marjorie was a Girl Scout leader, helped organize the Harney “Carnival,” was a member of Bayview Club, Home Boosters Extension Club, Zonta International, and she was co-chair of BUFFY (the forerunner of United Way). She served on the Boone County Senior Services Board and served many years as secretary of the United Methodist Children’s Home Auxiliary. Marjorie was a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist, having served on many of its committees, and was a past president of the United Methodist Women. She was a 50-plus-year member of Ulen County Club, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Lady Elks, and had the distinct honor of being named Boone County’s Distinguished Senior Citizen along with her husband. One of Marjorie’s proudest moments in her service as a volunteer was when, as president of the Boone County Symphony Unit, now known as Symphony at Sunset, Inc., she graciously introduced the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in its premiere performance at the Lebanon Abner Longley Park. She then went on to serve in various capacities at the regional level for the ISO Women’s Group representing Boone County. Marjorie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and David Richards; granddaughter, Whitney Coons; nieces and nephews, Claudia (Jeff) Trefz, Greg (Nancy) Wall, Barbara (Mark) Tankersley, Joe Wall, Donna Jane Gosnell, Jenny (Chuck) Ledoux, Tim (Debbie) Gosnell, Linda (Steve) Kuhlmann, Jill (Jon) Dible and Victor (Lori) Swope; and special great-nephew and –niece, John Trefz and Amelia Trefz. Marjorie was preceded in death her parents and husband; her brother, Donald Gosnell; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred and Robert Swope and Maxine and Robert Wall; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Osgood; son-in-law, Bruce Coons; and a nephew, Doug Gosnell. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Powell Chapel, Oak Hill Cemetery, Lebanon. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel, with the Rev. Arch Hawkins and the Rev. Jarrod Kendall presiding. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Symphony at Sunset, Inc., P.O.
