William H. Bedell

William Howard Bedell, 92, Lebanon, went to dance with Mom on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, while resting peacefully at Zionsville Meadows. He was born in Tiskilwa, Ill., on Aug. 28, 1921, to Jess and Mabel Bedell. Howard married the love of his life, Breena (Peggy) Lore, in Indianapolis on Aug. 25, 1949. He grew up working on his father’s farms in Illinois and central Indiana. He graduated from Warren Central High School in 1940. After high school he worked as a mechanic for the Indianapolis Police Department motorcycle division before he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Howard served as an aircraft mechanic while in the Army and was stationed in South Carolina during World War II. After, he continued to serve in the Army Reserves as an aircraft mechanic. After the service he worked at Indianapolis Power and Light as a lineman. He left IP&L and traveled the state, maintaining industrial boilers for AB Young Co. before starting his own business, with the help of his wife Peggy. They operated the Village Kwik Kleen Laundromat and Dry Cleaners along with the Village Car Wash in Zionsville until 1980. They then helped his brother-in-law and wife operate the Chapel Hill Cleaners until retirement in 1983. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. During his time in the Zionsville community, he was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Zionsville Fire Department, American Legion and Lions Club. Howard received the Town Crier Award from the Chamber of Commerce for his outstanding service to the community. Both Howard and Peggy enjoyed music and dancing. They were active in the Indianapolis Jazz Club and the Colonial Square Jazz Band, where they played to the enjoyment of many in and around Indianapolis. Howard and Peggy were fortunate to have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2009. Howard and Peg are now together again. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert, and wife Peggy. Survivors include daughter, Cynthia Hicks of Monticello; sons Gregory (Donna) Bedell of Zionsville, and Jess (Marina) Bedell of Lebanon; three granddaughters, Krystal (Eric) Ping, Jessica (James) Miller, and Ashlea Bedell; one grandson, Seth Bedell; two great-granddaughters, Erika Ping and Mary Ellen Miller; one great-grandson, Tanner Bedell; sister Hazel Own of Oklahoma; and twin brothers, Chester (Ollie) of Florida and Lester of Indianapolis. Visitation with the family will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, with a Celebration of Life Memorial service to follow immediately at Zionsville United Methodist Church, 9644 Whitestown Road, with Pastor Jim Gentry officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions are made, in Howard's name, to CurePSP, 30 East Pandonia Road, Suite 201, Timonium, MD 21093. The family also wants to thank St. Vincent Hospice and Zionsville Meadows for their care and compassion during Howard's last days, and Zionsville United Methodist Church for all they have done to support the family during the passing of both Howard and Peggy. Arrangements are entrusted to Bussell Family Funerals, Carmel.
