Georgia Laverne Tucker

Indianapolis

1919-2013

Georgia Laverne Wright Tucker went to be with our Lord on April 19, 2013.

She was born Aug. 23, 1919, to George and Mary Bertha Wright in Guymon, Okla. She was the fifth of eight children and preferred to go by “Laverne.” She spoke often of her times in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl and how she would jump from tumbleweed to tumbleweed to keep the barren ground from burning her feet. The family moved back to Illinois because the Dust Bowl was so bad and they gave up their family homesteading farm.

She met Robert Wilson Tucker in Brocton, Ill., and they were married July 13, 1939, and were married for 43 years. Laverne and Bob moved to Bloomington, Ill., where she worked at the orphanage. They later moved to Indianapolis and remained there for the remainder of their lives.

She was baptized at Fairfax Christian Church and later transferred her membership to Chapel Rock Christian Church “Joy Class.” She enjoyed working in the nursery and with toddlers on Sunday mornings and helped in the kitchen and with mailings whenever she was needed.

Laverne and Bob had two daughters, Karen Lynn Acord Pierce, husband James Pierce, of Boone County; and Debra Elaine Sauter, husband William M. Sauter. Laverne was a honorary member of Jobs Daughters and PTA member. She was a leader of Blue Birds and Campfire Girls and enjoyed camping and traveling in her RV. Her hobbies included oil painting, sewing, crocheting, quilting, and embroidery. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed working in her flower beds even into old age.

After the death of Bob, she married Herbert Russell in 1992, and they enjoyed each other’s company for five years before he preceded her in death. Dancing was a favorite activity for them. She was a member of Indianapolis Senior Citizens, the Continental Club and Scottish Rite Cathedral.

After Herbs’ death, she devoted most of her time to helping at Chapel Rock Church and spending time with her grandchildren. She has four grandchildren, Gordon (Melinda) Acord, William J. Sauter, Nicholas R. (Kristine) Sauter and Trenton M. Sauter. There are four great-grandchildren, Aaron Acord, William R. Sauter, Katelyn R. Sauter, and Allison D. Sauter. She also had two stepsons, Gary Russell and Steven Russell, one step-great-grandson, John (Felicia) Hunt, and one step-great-great granddaughter, Stephanie Hunt.

She was preceded in death by her father, George Wright; and mother, Bertha Weber Wright; her husband, Robert Wilson Tucker; brother, Ralph Wright; sister, Louise Wright Cummings; sister, Marie Wright Johnson; sister, June Wright Johnson; and brother, George Wright, Jr. Two sisters survive her, Esther Wright Blanford and Bertha Wright Carter.

She has requested that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 6030 W. 62nd St., Indianapolis, IN 46278, or Chapel Rock Christian Church.

A funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m., Monday, April 22, in Conkle Funeral Home Speedway Chapel. Visitation will be there from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 21, Burial in Washington Park North Cemetery.

Online condolences may be shared at: conklefuneralhome.com.
