Douglas A. Witherell, 84, of Arcadia, Fla., and formerly of South Dennis, Mass., died Saturday, April 20, 2013, at his wife’s residence in Lebanon. The son of Russell and Hazel Alice Witherell, Doug was born Oct. 10, 1928, in Harwich, Mass. He was reared and educated in Massachusetts then proudly served his country by enlisting in the Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was married to Mary Robinson for 53 years; she preceded him in death. Doug worked at Nausett Marine selling, repairing and in all phases of the operation. He owned his own marina for a period of time.
His memberships included Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Good Sams Camping Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed playing cards and golfing. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and lived for baseball season. Doug enjoyed his wide circle of friends in the Live Oak Resort community in Arcadia. One of those friends paired Doug with a golf partner, Ruth Hungate. They enjoyed many great times together and on Jan. 24, 2007, they were married in Las Vegas.
Doug is survived by his wife; stepmother, Lucille Witherell of Harwich, Mass.; sister, Elaine (Buddy) Julin of Naples, Fla.; brother, Donald (Denise) Witherell of Brewster, Mass.; son, Scott Allan (Marcia) Witherell of Yarmouthport, Mass.; granddaughters, Cyndi (Rob) Penny of Akron, Ohio, and Valerie (Geoff)) Mulholland of Massachusetts; grandsons, Jeff Witherell of New York, Tom and Mike Witherell of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; daughter-in-law, Kathy Witherell of Cape Elizabeth; great-granddaughter, Matilda Penny of Akron, Ohio; stepchildren, Mark, Steve, Cary and Eric Hungate, Cathy Winteregg, and numerous stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Keith Witherell.
Family and friends will gather from 4 until 6 p.m. Friday, April 26, in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon.
