Mr. Laurel Eugene “Gene” Highland, 87, of Lebanon, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon.
Gene was born in Brown Township in Hendricks County, on May 23, 1926, a son of the now late Firm Henry and Edna Elma (Williams) Highland.
He attended various grade schools in Boone County, and Perry Central High School. He entered the United States Navy on Sept. 26, 1944, and served during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Region on the USS Sappho AKA 38. During his service he received several ribbons, including the Victory Ribbon, American Area Ribbon and Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on June 27, 1946.
On Jan. 29, 1947, he was married to Mary Evelyn Shaw in Whitestown. Mrs. Highland survives.
For 28 years, Gene owned and operated H & H Automotive Supply in Sheridan and Lebanon.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gene and Mary enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years.
Gene was past president of Boone County Chamber of Commerce, a member of Lebanon Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge in Mechanicsburg, VFW Post # 910 in Lebanon, American Legion in Lebanon and a charter member of the Elks Lodge # 2606 in Punta Gorda, Fla.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Highland of Lebanon; five children, Samuel Leroy Highland of Crawfordsville, Richard Alan Highland of Kirklin, Joseph Martin (Cindy) Highland of Rockville (Raccoon Lake), Laura Jean Maile of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Debra (Donald) Kasper of Aiken, S.C.; five sisters, Anna Mae Hartsock of Lebanon, Mary Irick of Anderson, Margaret Hawkins and Glorena Goode, both of Indianapolis, and Clara Brace of Watsonville, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Samuel (Glenda) Highland Jr. of Lebanon, Christopher (Carrie) Highland of Altus, Okla., Gary Loveless and Adam Loveless, both of West Palm Beach, Shawn (Ryan) Ulmann of Alexandria, Va., Scott (Angela) Highland of Plainfield, Michell (Steve) Darnell of Burnettsville, Bobbi Emmons of Indianapolis and Travis Sample of West Palm Beach; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
