Donald W. Campbell, 72, of Lebanon, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Roudebush Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis.
Don was born July 19, 1941, in Lebanon, the son of the now late Ernest E. and Mary Elizabeth (Dove) Campbell. He graduated from the Lebanon High School. Don proudly served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army. Mr. Campbell was the Boone County Veterans Service Officer for 14 years until his retirement in 2013.
His interests were varied and he was very passionate about being a firefighter. Don served the Lebanon community as a firefighter for 32 years.
He owned and operated Don’s Garage at his home for many years; he also worked as a mechanic with Jim Small’s garage.
Don was an avid Jeff Gordon fan, and he enjoyed fishing.
His memberships included the American Legion, VFW Post 910, VFW Post 910 Honor Guard, Eagles Club and the Walnut Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann (Nienaber) Campbell; children, Marlene Scott, Ernie (Cari) Campbell and Gina Barnes, all of Lebanon; stepchildren, Rebecca Lynn (Daniel) Criss of Canton, Ohio, Regina (Bobby) Pifer of Colfax and Steven (Courtney) Nienaber of Colfax; siblings, Sharon (Garland) Killen of Cocoa, Fla., and Robert Witt of Lebanon; eight grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna C. (Doughty) Campbell in 1999, and sister, Janet Sue Campbell.
Family and friends will gather on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Lee Faust officiating in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Mr. Campbell will be laid to rest in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Lebanon following Military Rites to be presented by VFW Post 910 Honor Guard.
