Jackie L. “Jack” Burtner

Mr. Jackie L. “Jack” Burtner, 73, of Mechanicsburg, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at Witham memorial Hospital in Lebanon.

Mr. Burtner was born on March 16, 1935, in Lebanon. He was the son of the late Walter Sanford Burtner and Fannie Myrtle (Dunnigan) Burtner.

He was inducted into the United States Air Force in October of 1951. He then served in the United States Army during the Korean War and ended his active service in 1964. He then joined the Indiana National Guard in 1965 and retired from the military in 1989. He achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major in the 38th Infantry.

Mr. Burtner married Freda (Hinton) Burtner Dec. 23, 1955, in Iswich, England. Mrs. Burtner died Feb. 23, 2001.

He worked as a brick mason for ten years with Burtner Brothers Construction. For a period he also worked as a policeman for the city of Lebanon. He was a self-employed masonry contractor for 19 years until 1991. He then worked as a security guard at Hoosier Village Retirement Center in Lebanon before retiring several years ago.

Mr. Burtner was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his family he particularly enjoyed golf, church, billiards, gardening and his work.

He was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Lebanon and Boone Lodge No. 9 F. & A. M. in Lebanon. He was formerly in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Lebanon Moose Lodge, Lebanon Elks Lodge, American Legion Post 113 in Lebanon, V.F.W. Post 410 in Lebanon, Indianapolis Scottish Rite and the Indianapolis Murat Shrine.

Survivors include seven children, Gary Burtner and wife Gayle of Arizona, Walter S. Burtner and wife Bridgette of Lebanon, Kenneth J. Burtner and wife Cheryl of Indianapolis, Robert C. Burtner and wife Teresa of Mechanicsburg, Randy Burtner and wife Tamra of Plainfield, Michael W. Burtner and wife Breanna of Indianapolis and Roger R. Burtner of Kirklin; his companion, Aline Stewart of Lebanon; one brother, George Burtner of Lebanon; one sister, Juanita Myers and husband Wayne of Lafayette; fourteen grandchildren, Dawn Gallagher and husband David of Arizona, Josh Burtner and wife Misty of Arizona, Beau Burtner of Lebanon, Brittany Burtner of Lebanon, Breanna Burtner of Lebanon, Aaron Burtner and wife Jennifer of Noblesville, Jackie Burtner and wife Katrina of Danville, Laura Adams and husband Carl of Kentucky, Michelle Burtner of Mechanicsburg, Stephanie Steward of Plainfield, Tyler Steward of Plainfield, Adam Burtner of Indianapolis, Garrett Burtner of Indianapolis and Mitchell Burtner of Indianapolis; and six great-grandchildren, Dannika, Danielle, Levi, Kayleigh, Keon and Kensley.

Mr. Burtner was preceded in death by a son, Jackie L. Burtner; two grandchildren, Robert Burtner Jr. and Matthew Ferch; three brothers, Otis, Edwin and Lloyd Burtner; a sister, Edna Shelley; and fourteen half brothers and half sisters.

Visitation is planned for 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Also on Thursday, Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. and Elks Rites at 8:00 p.m. at Myers Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Pastor Doug Willey officiating. Interment will follow military rites at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
