John Ora Baker

John Ora Baker, 84, of Indianapolis, formerly of Lebanon, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Indianapolis.

John was born July 22, 1924 in Indianapolis, the son of the late Ora Anson Baker and Ruth (Kaiser) Baker.

He attended Southport High School until the 10th grade and then attended Arsensel Technical High School, prior to joining the United States Navy. He served his country in the war effort from 1941 to 1945.

John returned from the service and held several jobs before going to work for Ford Motor Company in Indianapolis in 1964. He retired from Ford in 1987, after 23 years with the company.

John married Arbutus Mae (Dunn) Baker May 14, 1984, in Indianapolis. Mrs. Baker died April 3, 2000.

He had two previous marriages to Florence Bowers and Betty (Albrecht) Phillips. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, John enjoyed his church, family and friends. His hobbies included woodworking, attending auctions and shopping at garage sales.

John was a member of Lebanon Rock Church, in Lebanon.

Survivors include five children, Kathy Abel and husband Steve of Indianapolis, Barbara Baker of Cody, Wyo., John Stephen Baker of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Stacy Baker of Indianapolis and Gary Baker of Indianapolis; two stepchildren, Sue Johnfauno of Indianapolis and Mary Denk and husband Raymond of California; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae; sister, Mary Pressmal; stepson, Charles Phillips; and two brothers, William L. Baker and Robert Baker.

Visitation will he held from 12 to 2 p.m. today at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, at Myers Mortuary, in Lebanon. Interment with military rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2008 at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Boone County.
