Barbara "Nadine" Halstead

Mrs. Barbara "Nadine" Halstead,  86, of Chesterton, formerly of Lebanon, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013, at VNA Hospice in Valparaiso.

Mrs. Halstead was born June 13, 1927, in Montezuma, Ind., a daughter of the now late Harry L. and Maude L. (Kennedy) VanHook. Reared and educated in Zionsville, she was a 1945 graduate of Zionsville High School.

She married Howard E. Halstead on Aug. 30, 1946, in Zionsville. Mr. Halstead passed away in 1989.

Mrs. Halstead worked for Pittman Moore in Zionsville, and later at PTI in Zionsville and in Michigan City as a dispatcher.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she enjoyed the time spent with her family and friends. She was a dedicated member of VFW Auxiliary and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.

Survivors include daughter, Heather (Anthony) Shingler of Chesterton; brother, Norman VanHook of Leesburg, Fla.; four sisters, Sue (John) Randle of Cloverdale, Kay (Gary) Stewart of Port Charlotte, Fla., Judy (Wayne) Massey of River Falls, Wis., and Mary Jackson of Lebanon; four grandchildren, Darrian Reich, Kyle Reich, Kayla (Cody) Hughes and Joe Shingler; two great-grandchildren, Khloe Reich and Naomi Hughes; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, James VanHook; and a sister, Phyllis Uhler.

Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Myers Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. David Wright officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Boone County.
