Edward Flynn Crain

Mr. Edward Flynn Crain, 81, of Lebanon, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon.

He was born July 11, 1931, in Indianapolis, to the now late Leon James and Margaret (Nelson) Crain.

While attending and then graduating from Arsenal Technical High School, Indianapolis, in 1949, Mr. Crain was also serving in the Indiana Air National Guard, 113th Weather Station, at Stout Field in Indianapolis. He later worked for Western Electric Company until 1951, when he enlisted into the United States Air Force.

After graduating from weather school at Chanute AFB, Ill., he was assigned to Wurtsmith AFB, Michigan. In 1953, he went overseas to Korea, where he was assigned as senior weather observer at K-8, Kunsan AFB. While there, besides regular weather station duties, he instructed ROK army personnel on air force weather subjects. In 1954, he was rotated back to the states and was assigned to Hunter AFB, Savannah, Ga., and was then discharged in 1955. His highest rank was that of staff sergeant.

Mr. Crain attended Indiana University after re-entering civilian life, and later held various positions in the field of manufacturing. He worked as a purchasing agent, materials control supervisor, superintendent of manufacturing, general foreman of materials distribution and welding and final assembly foreman. He was retired from Union Carbide Corp., Division of Dow Chemical Corp.,; and Process Filtration Company, Division of Parker-Hannifin Corp.

He married Betty Lou (Quick) Phelps on Aug. 14, 1964, in Lebanon. Mrs. Crain survives.

Along with his wife, Betty, and son, Mark, he enjoyed the many fishing trips taken to Dogtooth Lake and Manaki, Ontario, Canada. He was a passionate walleye fisherman and loved the great outdoors. He looked forward to his garden work, taking care of the five acres of trees and grass he maintained, and being with his son, Mark, in his Special Olympics activities. He had a great sense of humor and was a wonderful father to Mark.

Mr. Crain was a member of The American Legion, Post 113, in Lebanon.
