Mrs. Delores Frolene “Dee” Kouns, 82, of Whitestown, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon.
A native of Roxana, Ill., Dee was born on Aug. 20, 1930, a daughter of the now late Frank Lee and Eva Christine (Murphy) Miller. She lived in Illinois through the fourth grade, when her family moved to Indiana. She attended schools in Lebanon through the eighth grade and then moved to Zionsville, where she graduated in 1949 from Zionsville High School.
She married Robert Leon Kouns on Nov. 23, 1950, in Zionsville. Mr. Kouns passed away on Dec. 12, 1973.
Dee loved to cook. In 1974, she began working as a substitute in the school cafeterias. For nearly 30 years, she worked full time in Sheridan at Marion Elementary and at Adams Elementary. During the summertime, she continued her love of cooking as head of concessions for her son-in-law, Larry, in the Pro Shop at Riverside Golf Course in Indianapolis.
Well-known and highly regarded in the community, Dee was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed her family, cooking and watching sports. She was also a member of Christian Liberty Church.
Survivors include three children, Kathy S. (Larry) Siddens of Zionsville, Kevin R. (Debbie) Kouns of Whitestown, and Karen L. (Dan) Karaszewski of Lonsdale, Minn.; sister, Judy Smith-Dias of Whitestown; six grandchildren, Jessica Siddens of Indianapolis, Marshall (Carrie) Siddens of Lebanon, Josh (Kourtney) Kouns of Whitestown, Molly (Matthew) Barrick of Sheridan, Kasey (David) Conklin of Wylie, Texas, and Kerri (Sean) Kiracofe of Dallas, Texas; and five great-grandchildren, Trey, Kenzie, Walker, Reese and Clark.
Her parents, Frank L. Miller and Christine Miller Red, her husband, Robert L. Kouns, two brothers, John Red and Frank Miller Jr., and two sisters, Cynthia Cornish and Maretta Shelby, are deceased.
Visitation and funeral services were held over the weekend. A family interment service was held Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.
