Mary Lyde Duff

Miss Mary Lyde Duff, 99, of Lebanon, died Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon.

Mary was born April 18, 1913, in Lebanon, the fourth child of the now late William Forrest and Cora Thomas (Wood) Duff.

She was reared on the family farm east of Lebanon, and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1930. A 1934 graduate of Purdue University, Mary was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority while in college. She also attended Central Business College in Indianapolis.

During the depression, Mary worked for L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis in Personal Shopping Service. She later worked for Prudential Insurance as head of Auditing and Accounting in the Mortgage Loan office. She returned to Lebanon to help care for her aging parents and went to work for Commercial Filters as an accountant. She retired from there in 1978, after 28 years of employment.

In retirement, Mary spent six months of the year in Florida and the other six months in Lebanon. She did this for 11 years, before moving back to Lebanon full time. Although she never married, Mary was the family caregiver. Her nieces and nephews considered her their favorite aunt, and she was always the first stop-in on their return visits to Lebanon.

Mary was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lebanon.

Survivors include nephews, Robert A. (Phyllis) Duff of Lebanon and William (Mary) Duff of Texas; nieces, Judy Adams of Virginia, and Nancy (George) Morton and Mary Jane Duff, all of Lebanon.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her three older brothers, William Wood Duff, James Fred Duff and Robert Rhea Duff; and a nephew, Robert Sanger.

Visitation is 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, April 22, at Powell Chapel in Oak Hill Cemetery, 935 E. Washington St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the chapel, with the Rev. Terri Thorn officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.

Myers Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 128 E. Main St., Lebanon, IN 46052.
