Sandra Lynn “Sandy” Heffner, 54, of Lebanon, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at Skaggs Community Medical Center in Branson, Mo.
Sandy was born Jan. 1, 1958, in Lebanon. She was a daughter of Norma Jean (Graham) Staton and the late Woodrow “Woody” Staton.
A lifelong resident of Boone County, she graduated from Zionsville High School in 1976. She then received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Butler University.
She married Douglas “Doug” Lee Heffner on July 16, 1983, in Zionsville; he survives.
Sandy was a well-liked teacher in the Boone County community. She began her teaching career at Pleasant View Elementary in Zionsville, where she taught for 10 years. She took some time off to raise her own children and went back to teach at Granville Wells Elementary, and had been there for 20 years. Her love was seen throughout her life including her service as a Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher.
A devoted wife, mother and teacher, she loved her school kids as much as her own children. Sandy was honored with the 2008 Teacher of the Year award for the Western Boone School Corporation.
She was a member of New Brunswick Church of Christ, Lebanon, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Survivors include her husband, Doug Heffner of Lebanon; her mother, Norma Jean Staton of Zionsville; two children, Melissa Lynn Heffner of Indianapolis and Andrew Douglas (Kim) Heffner of Lebanon; two brothers, Randy Staton and Larry (Brenda) Staton, all of Zionsville; two nieces, Katie Staton and Lizzie Staton; two nephews, Chris Heffner and Jacob Staton; parents-in-law, Howard Lee and Carolyn Jean Heffner of Lebanon; and sister-in-law, Melody Statzer of Cicero.
Visitation is 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the New Brunswick Church of Christ, 6480 S. Ind. 39, Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the church. Interment will follow at Old Union Cemetery in rural Jamestown.
