John Virgil McCloskey Jr

Mr. John Virgil McCloskey Jr., 83, of Whitestown, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana in Indianapolis.

John was born Sept. 22, 1929, in Marion County, a son of the now late Clara B. (Roach) and John Virgil McCloskey Sr. He attended Washington High School in Indianapolis and Avon High School in Avon.

He married Joan Carmen Walls on Jan. 15, 1949, in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Mrs. McCloskey survives.

For 31 years, John worked at Allison Transmission Division of General Motors Corp., before retiring in 1981.

As a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he loved his family and took pride in his children and grandchildren. In 1975, John and his wife began wintering in Florida. He was an avid fisherman, and he liked to hunt rabbits. In addition, in his early years, he enjoyed golden glove boxing, playing semi-pro football and playing softball with the Allison team.

He was a member of Slovenian National Home, Indianapolis.

Survivors include his wife, Joan C. McCloskey of Whitestown; six children, Diana (David) Leffler of Thorntown, Pam (Jack) Summitt of Lebanon, Sheila (James “Chico”) Bear of Pittsboro, Mark (Vickie) McCloskey of Lebanon, John (Rebecca) McCloskey of Bloomington, and Dan (Angie) McCloskey; brother, George “Bill” (Gloria) McCloskey of Sarasota, Fla.; three sisters, Ellen (James) Hankins of Grand Junction, Colo., Norma Jean Poulson of Nixa, Mo., and Clara Ann Sharpe of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Georgiana “Betty” Clark; and three grandsons, Norman Ray McCloskey, Jack R. Leffler II, and Eric McCloskey.

Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Pastor Lee Faust officiating. Myers Mortuary is entrusted with the arrangements for cremation.
