William R. "Dick" Nesbitt

William Richard "Dick" Nesbitt, 93, of rural Romney, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, in Witham Memorial Hospital, following a short illness. Dick was born Feb. 3, 1920, in rural Montgomery County, son of the now late Herman B. and Ruth Miller Nesbitt. He married Ruby Watts in Henderson, Ky., on June 25, 1942; and she survives. They were approaching their 72nd wedding anniversary. Dick was a graduate of New Richmond High School and attended Purdue University School of Agriculture for two years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, spending a year in Alamogordo, N.M., and two years in England. He had attained the rank of Tech. Sgt. before his honorable discharge, and he remained a very patriotic and proud American. He farmed in the Romney community until his retirement. He raised grain and livestock, and was particularly proud of raising and showing purebred Shorthorn Cattle with his family. Being a man of the land, following retirement he enjoyed gardening and nurturing his flowers. Dick and Ruby spent the past 30 winters in Arizona, where they hiked the mountain trails, sightseeing and enjoying retirement. He was a member of Jackson Heights United Methodist Church; and was a 50-year member of the New Richmond United Methodist Church, where he had been active and served as Sunday school superintendent. He was a supporter of 4-H programs and musical activities at Coal Creek Central School. He was an avid supporter of Purdue athletics, and a lifelong disappointed Chicago Cubs fan. Dick had enjoyed woodworking and just recently turned his woodworking tools over to his son. Dick was a family man. He loved, was devoted to and proud of his family. A colorful character, Dick never met a stranger and could talk with ease to anyone about anything. He enjoyed all things political and would never miss an opportunity to explain his view of current events. He was a storyteller who could connect stories from his past to current-day events. Survivors, including his wife Ruby, are two daughters, Katherine Marie (James) Decker of Clarksville, Tenn., and Carol Ann (Richard) Nester of Lebanon; a son, William Michael (Maxine) Nesbitt of Carmel; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Joe) Taylor, Andrew Decker, Tyler (Meghan) Nester, Suzanna (Jeff) Mayhugh, Kacia (Andy) Mills, Abigail (Todd) Geders and Ellen Nesbitt; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Greenburg of Franklin and Helen (Carl) Williams of Pittsboro, N.C.; a brother, John (Wanda) Nesbitt of Owings Mills, Md.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Tom Nesbitt; and three sisters, Martha Steinbicker, Winifred Nesbitt and Doris Jackson. The family will receive guests from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Jackson Heights United Methodist Church, with Pastor Chuck Tague officiating. Burial will follow in New Richmond Cemetery, with graveside rites by American Legion Post 72 and Bowman VFW of Crawfordsville.
