Egyptian night

Judy Mrozinski shows her granddaughter Lilly, a kindergartner at Central Elementary, where Egypt and Germany — where her mom is from — are on a globe Wednesday evening at Central’s Egypt family art night. Employees from the Indianapolis Children’s Museum brought artifacts and art stations from their Egyptian exhibit to share with the Central students, like Egyptian spices, drums and jewelry. “The kids get to touch things actually from Egypt, experience things,” said Central art teacher Nicole Lewis, who organized the event. She teaches several grades Egyptian art and culture.

Pupils at Granville Wells Elementary School sent the Boone County Highway Department this letter of appreciation, displayed by Highway Superintendent Tom Kouns at Monday’s Boone County Commissioner’s meeting. Kouns said that through Feb. 25 the county has spent about $145,000 to spread about 2,575 tons of salt and sand mixture on roads this winter. That’s 650 tons more than last year, but at the same cost. The difference is that Boone County was able to join the Indiana Department of Transportation’s salt bid, which dramatically reduced the cost of salt, Kouns said. The cost and tonnage exclude the last two winter storms to hit the county, he said.

Amber and Mark Northrop enjoy the chocolate fondue Saturday evening at the Lebanon Fire Auxiliary Firefighters Ball at the Lebanon Eagles. The couple has been to the Firefighters Ball every year since it began four years ago. “It’s a nice date night without the kids,” Amber said. Lisa Wirey of the LFA said attendance was a little down this year, but they have still been able to donate in big ways to numerous local charities and foundations. “We’ve been doing really great without helping everyone out,” she said. The next LFA event is the hog roast and barbecue June 26, featuring a performance by The Flying Toasters.

WeBo Stars sing

Western Boone’s Star Voices show choir sings and dances to N’sync’s “Bye, bye, bye” during a rehearsal Wednesday. Star Voices will perform at WeBo’s high school cabaret 7 p.m. Saturday in the high school’s cafeteria. “They’re getting a taste of singing and dancing at the same time,” said Alli Darley, long-term substitute teacher. “And there’s one, big dance number they’ve been working on. This is their time to shine.” The two big numbers will be a WeBo version of “Cabaret” and “One” from the musical “A Chorus Line,” Darley said. The rest of the show will be solos, duets and small group performances. Tickets are $5 for all ages, and it includes dessert and a beverage.

Wall hanging

Sophomore Melissa Petty and junior Zach Edwards apply another two feet of duct tape to Lebanon High School Principal Kevin O’Rourke Monday in the school cafeteria. O’Rourke agreed to be taped to the wall to help LHS’s FFA group raise money for Heifer International, an organization that provides livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to persons in Third World countries. Students and teachers at each of the school’s four lunch periods bought one or two feet of tape; the lunch period that collected the most money would win Dairy Queen cakes, said Sara Forsythe, FFA secretary. The Lebanon Rotary Club was matching donations up to $500. The event was the kick-off for FFA Week, which runs through Saturday.

Byron Ernest and his son, Heath, try their hand at roulette Saturday evening at Lebanon Educational Foundation’s annual casino night fundraiser at Ulen Country Club. Cheri Goodwin, LEF executive director, said they had around 80 people register for the event — about the same as last year. But she was hoping to hit her goal of 100 people with walk-ins. “The dealers are really lenient, and it’s fun,” she said. “I’m very, very pleased with it.” The night was full of casino games by the Broad Ripple Sertoma Club, food, drinks and a silent auction.

Hoodie Day?

Today is Hoodie Day. Visitors and staff at the Thorntown Public library have celebrated each year since 2004. This official holiday was designed to banish winter and has worked every year since the library began participating. “Participation is not an option. It is rather like a tornado drill. If you are in the library at noon on Feb. 20, you will Hoodie Hoo. It is an event to describe to children and grandchildren and worthy of a writing assignment. However, it is imperative that it be spelled correctly and we are pleased that every year winter has disappeared,” said library director Karen Niemeyer.

Braden Haines gets a cookie from Emerson Haines while Shelby Brown and Alex Dawes man the cookie table Wednesday afternoon at Hattie B. Stokes Elementary School. The Stokes student council held an Angel Fund fundraiser for the Haiti earthquake relief effort during the lunch break, where students could donate 50 cents or more and receive a home-baked cookie — including snickerdoodle, chocolate chip, cinnamon and Oreo. Though the fundraiser had gone “pretty well,” said volunteer Melinda Haines, the Wednesday-only event was stretched through Thursday as well because of Tuesday’s snow day. “Since they didn’t have any school,” Haines said, “I think a lot of the children may have forgotten.”

It's all downhill

Lebanon teens took advantage of a snow day to do some sledding and snow boarding Tuesday, on the hill at the CXS bridge over South street. Above, a group of boys climb up the hill’s slick slope. Those going up the right side had a slight advantage; a rope had been fastened between trees to provide a stable handhold. In the photo at right, Issac Babb hits a ramp of snow and catches air two-thirds of the way down the hill. The boy said the conditions were perfect for downhill sports Tuesday afternoon. “There’s fresh powder; it’s great,” said Colin Walford, before making his way back up the hill.
