VIDEO: Meet the primary candidates

Each year, The Lebanon Reporter publishes information on candidates for the primary election. Below you will find a list of each candidate's qualifications, as well as videos showing their responses to questions relating to their office.

The following is a partial list of duties for the offices up for election:

Superior Court II

Indiana has 143 Superior Courts. Judges run under party banners for six-year terms. Superior Courts have roughly the same powers as Circuit Courts to try any kind of case, aind includes small claims and minor offense divisions.


  • Conservator of the peace
  • Take charge of the county jail and its prisoners.
  • Serve warrants, subpoenas and other forms of process
  • Collect delinquent state income taxes
  • Sell mortgaged property
  • Attend sessions of th County Council and Commissioners


Board of Commissioners has three members from three districts serving four year, staggered terms.

  • Controling, cmaintaining and supervising county property.
  • Auditing and authorizing claims.
  • Receiving bids and authorizing contracts.
  • Supervising construction and maintenance of roads and bridges.
  • Issuing bonds or notes (with county council approval)
  • Recommending county salaries to the county council
  • Establishing animal shelters

County Council

The council has the financial power and serves as a check to the Board of Commissioners. The county is divided in to four districts, with one member from each district and three at large.

  • Fix the tax rate and impose the tax levy
  • Make appropriations to be paid by the county treasury
  • Reappropriate surplus fund
  • Fix salaries of officers, deputies assistants and other employees

Superior Court II Judge: Jim Holden

Education: Bachelor’s degree, political science, Indiana University
Juris doctorate, Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis
Graduate of the Army Judge Advocate Officer Advanced Course, U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School

Experience: Former Indiana Deputy Attorney General; Former Deputy Commissioner, Indiana Department of Insurance
Major and Judge Advocate, 38th Infantry Division, Indiana Army National Guard
Adjunct Professor of Political Science and Legal Studies, IUPUI

Community or volunteer activities: Past President, Redevelopment Authority
Past Board Member, Economic Development Commission
Past Treasurer, Boone County Republican Central Committee
Certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program volunteer for low income taxpayers


Superior Court II Judge: Bruce Petit

Education: 1978, Graduated from Purdue with a BS in Ag-Econ; 1982, Graduated from IU School of Law, Indianapolis, magna cum laude

Experience: 1982 – Present, managed private civil practice on litigation, trial work and in-court proceedings; 1982-1988, deputy prosecutor, Hamilton County, major felony cases; 1989-present, Boone County chief deputy and deputy prosecutor, major felony cases and juvenile matters

Community or volunteer activities: Serve on the Boone County School Community Committee; School Safety Commission for Boone County; volunteer to establish Boone County Youth assistance program helping to identify and coordinate services for at risk juveniles and their families



Sheriff: Joseph Dennemann

Education: I am a Graduate of the 162nd Class of the Indiana Law Enforcement academy, State of Indiana Crime Scene Investigator School, Drug Recognition Expert School, and evidence collection and preservation school.

Experience: I am a veteran member of the Zionsville Police Department that serves as a Patrol Officer and Crime Scene Investigator.

Community or volunteer activities: I have always been active with the youth of Boone County. The Boys and Girls Club, Little League, and Youth as Resources are some of the organizations that I have been a part of.

Sheriff: Mike Nielsen

Education: A.A.S. in Engineering, bachelor’s of business management (magna cum laude), master’s degree of business management, Boone County Law Enforcement Academy, Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, FBI National Academy, leadership, ethics and management focus

Experience: My experience includes: 12 years as an engineering firm manager, 30 years as a Boone County law enforcement officer, enforcement lieutenant, chief deputy, polygraph examiner, FBI trained hostage negotiator and command operations

Community or volunteer activities: United Way Advisory Board, Special Olympics board, president of SAFE Kids, Prevent Child Abuse Council, Child Advocacy Center board of directors, Indiana Sheriff’s Association board of directors, Rotarian, ILETR Coordinator, Domestic Violence board member, FBI National Academy first vice president

Commissioner District 1: Marc Applegate

Education: Zionsville High School 1970; Montana State University w/ Business Administration Degree in Business – 1975

Experience: Co-owner and president of Amco Elevators; Union Township Advisory Board – four years (served three years as president); Boone County Commissioner – seven years (served three years as president).

Community or volunteer activities: Boys & Girls Club coach; Eagle Fest chairman, twice; ABC Association, treasurer & board; Zionsville Rotary, treasurer & board; Community Foundation of Boone County, chairman; Senior Services Foundation board, one year; Zionsville Fellowship, 28 years. [edited]

Commissioner District 1: Julia Evinger

Education: 2013 GOP Indiana Leadership Forum (ILF); 2012 Real Estate Academy of Leadership; Attended Loyola University of Chicago; studied business administration.

Experience: Professional Realtor; 2013 Realtor of the Year, MIBOR and Boone County. Helping clients trust their family to and invest their assets in our communities. Past marketing manager at Fortune 500 company. Responsible for the short/long term planning, budgeting and implementation of programs.

Community or volunteer activities: Zionsville Chamber of Commerce Board member; Zionsville Band and Orchestra Past Vice President/Student Fundraising; Zionsville Education Foundation volunteer/grant committee; Zionsville Show Choirs; St. Alphonsus Church member. Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors, Director District 6.


County County District 1: Tom Santelli

Education: Bachelor Science; MBA Finance & Operations Research; Public Affairs Training - Burson Marsteller;  Effective Leadership - Boston College; General Management - McKinsey & Co; Effective Negotiation - Karrass.

Experience: Program Coordinator Public & Environmental Affairs; Product Management; Sales Management; General Management; Director Technology & Development Great Northern Nekoosa; Director R,D&E, Training and Capital Georgia-Pacific; director R,D&E and Business Development Weyerhaeuser; vice president Temple-Inland.

Community or Volunteer Activities: Benefactor and employer for Noble of Indiana; support the Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding Center, board of directors; president of Traders Point Hunt and active in the charity horse show; works with at risk children.


Gene Thompson

Education: I earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The Ohio State University and a master’s in financial services from The American College.

Experience: As a small business owner in the financial service field, I was responsible for administering a deferred compensation retirement benefit, serving more than 30,000 employees.

Community or volunteer activities: I am a past president of the Zionsville Lions Club and current board member and chair of the Partners and Friends committees. My wife Nancy and I are active members of Zionsville Presbyterian Church.



Jon "Chip" Cravens

Education: Graduated from University of Kentucky with a bachelor of business administration with an agriculture minor.
Experience: Ag Chem sale, general manager of Cory Orchard & Turf, a specialty ag chem. Distributor, with offices in three states.  Several years as a school board member in Zionsville
Community or volunteer activities: Coaching, stage management for Royalaires for several years, active with my church, several mission activities, reserve deputy with Boone County Sheriff Office.


Steve Jacob

Education: Purdue University— BS degree from the Krannert School; Wabash College—Executive Masters Program; Brookings Institute—how government works program before serving as Congressional Fellow. U.S. Congressional Fellow—one-year fellowship working in the U.S. Congress. [edited for length]

Experience: Time Warner Telecom, a Time Warner Inc. owned company—vice president and general manager; Woolpert Consultants—Associate partner

John Hume

Education: 1983 graduate Western Boone High School

Experience: Past Vice President and Secretary of Boone Co. Antique Tractor and Machinery Club, Past President of Hart-Parr/Oliver Collectors Association, 4-H and FFA Member.

Community and volunteer activities: Member of Pleasant View Church, Advance Conservation Club, Volunteer with Love INC.

Jim Hundley

Education: B.S. Purdue University, agriculture economics, ag business and finance.

Experience: Farmed 1976-1979; sales and marketing for four companies 1979-1998; worked and owned Boone Mutual Insurance Agency, 1998-present

Community or volunteer activities: Kiwanis, past president; 4-H Fair Board, past president; 4-H Council, past vice president; Indiana Reining Horse Association, past president and current treasurer; 4-H Pavilion Building Committee; Thorntown Elementary, past coach for basketball; Sheriff’s Citizen’s Academy graduate


Jay Schaumberg

Education:  Bachelor of science, Miami University.  

Experience:  I have more than 35 years of business and management experience.  My wife and own a 23 year old Lebanon- based company serving the manufacturing industry with computerized technology hardware and software solutions.

Community or volunteer activities:  I currently serve as president of the Boone County APC, my wife serves as a director for the Caring Center.  We are 30-plus year members of Traders Point Christian Church and are active in missions work to Zambia, Africa.
