Young Stars compete at Plainfield
By Jim Johnson/Sports Correspondent
The Western Boone boy’s track and field team competed in sectionals last night at Plainfield.
The team placed 11th out of 13 total teams. Avon won the entire sectional with a first place finish. Brownsburg, Plainfield, and Crawfordsville took the second, third, and fourth place spots.
"Overall, I think we competed pretty well," Western Boone coach Mark Riggins said as it rained on the event most of the evening. "It wasn’t the greatest conditions to run though. Place-wise, you’d like to do better, but the silver lining is that we have a lot of underclassmen and they competed against very good competition tonight."
The Stars didn’t have any runners advance from sectionals, but did have some who placed.
Sophomore Eric Biesecker was the only Western Boone athlete to place individually.
"We wasn’t seeded to place, but he did," Riggins said. "That was nice to see."
He got seventh in the 300-meter hurdles and then eighth in the long jump.
"He did better than we expected in those events," Riggins said.
Along with Biesecker the 3200-meter relay team of Jordan Musselman, Isaiah Underhill, Matt Taylor, and Matt Grissom placed sixth overall.
The 1600 meter relay team of Joe Burns, Evan Riley, Bryan Wood, and Scott Lowery placed seventh overall.
"Dealing with the circumstances that we had to deal with, I couldn’t be more pleased with how they responded to it," Riggins aid. "They lost a teammate and you hope not to have to deal with it, but we did."
WOODY AT REGIONALS
Sophomore Brandy Woody earned the right to advance from sectionals in her performance earlier this season. She moves on in the high jump and the 400 meter.
She has a fifth seed in the 400 this year after having a seventh seed last year at regional time.
"She has a chance," Riggins said. "With her, anything’s possible. I’m looking forward to it and I’m excited to see what happens."
She will compete at the regional level on Tuesday at West Lafayette.
