Trophy Club hosts Indiana PGA Tour

By Jim Johnson/Interim Sports Editor

Lebanon The Trophy Club Golf Course located just north of Lebanon hosted the Indiana PGA Tournament on Monday.

Two local golf pros participated in the tournament. Blake Wilson from the Ulen Country Club and B.G. Winings from the Trophy Club both placed in a seven-way tie for fourteenth place.

Each received $231.43 in winnings.

The winner, Quinn Griffing from Ft. Wayne, took the grand prize total of $2,000.

Griffing, from the Donald Ross Golf Club, shot a 4-under-par 68 on Monday.

“I was really patient with it,” Griffing said. “I hit a lot of greens, I hit a lot of fairways.”

Behind Griffing was Dave Fleming, from Otte Golf Center and Country Club, who took second place with a 69. His winnings included $1,500.

Wilson and Winings each posted a solid 75.

Winings played consistent with a 36 on the front nine and a 39 on the back.

He said something he likes about the Trophy Club course is that each time playing it it’s different because of the direction of wind and other weather conditions.

“I didn’t play well,” Winings said. “But I didn’t play terrible.”

Winings said he made two bogeys and two birdies on the front nine.

“On the back nine I just putted poorly,” Winings said. “My short wasn’t very good.”

Winings said he hasn’t played much golf this season due to a sore back.

“I haven’t played in any tournament and I didn’t play in any tournaments last year,” Winings said. “I don’t play in many of these events anymore.”

Wilson shot a 42 on the front nine and then came through on the back with a 33.

“It didn’t help getting here at the last second,” Wilson said.

Wilson said after getting there at the last second, he had to scramble to get ready and he counted on the back nine for a lower score.

“It seems like if I drive well then I play well,” Wilson said. “Then if I don’t, I don’t (play well).”

Wilson said the tournament on Monday was his first of the season and he could possibly play in more tournaments this summer.

“As of right now I have not entered in anything else,” Wilson said.
