Purdue reviews security ideas after shooting

WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) — Purdue University President Mitch Daniels says the school will take action from recommendations to improve its security response following a review prompted by January's deadly campus shooting.

A panel presented its report Wednesday after reviewing feedback from students and employees after the classroom attack during which police say a fellow student shot and stabbed 21-year-old Andrew Boldt of West Bend, Wis.

That committee suggested that all students be automatically registered to receive emergency text alerts, rather than being asked to "opt-in" for the alerts. The report says many people raised concerns about classroom doors without locks, while pointing out the cost of making about 41,200 doors on campus lockable.

Daniels says the report's suggestions will be implemented in the order that will make the most difference.
