Lebanon Fire Chief Ted Caldwell (left) and the State Bank of Lizton's Jeff Wood congratulate LFD Capt. Mike Baird for being named Lebnaon Firefighter of the Year.

Mike Baird had a very good Monday.

In the morning he was named Lebanon Firefighter of the Year by the State Bank of Lizton. In the evening, the Board of Works and Public Safety approved his promotion to captain.

Baird, a 19-year veteran of the Lebanon Fire Department, was recognized by the SBL for his dedication to the department’s child safety seat program, LFD Chief Ted Caldwell told the city Board of Works and Public Safety.

“We’re really proud of him,” Caldwell said.

Baird and several other firefighters took a week-long class in January 2007, learning how to correctly install every type of child safety seat on the market, Caldwell said.

Since then, Baird has diligently continued to shepherd the program, Caldwell said. Free installation of car seats is available by appointment at LFD’s Station Two on Anderson Lane every Friday; call 482-8885 for information.

Baird’s promotion will place him in charge of C shift, beginning Feb. 4, Caldwell said.

He replaces 20-year veteran Ted Maddox, who retired Jan. 20.

Maddox will continue to be a member of the Center Township Fire Department’s reserve force, Caldwell said.

The board of works approved the promotion of Joe Caldwell to lieutenant, replacing Baird.

Chief Caldwell said the department will immediately begin reviewing a pool of candidates to replace Joe Caldwell.
