A Thorntown woman pleaded guilty in the death of her 2-month-old son and was sentenced to 30 years with the Indiana Department of Correction.
Miranda Roberts, 26, pleaded guilty in October to voluntary manslaughter while acting under sudden heat, a lesser included charge of murder, which was her original charge.
Roberts had nearly three years’ credit for time served since the death of her son in January 2016. Boone Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Edens last week suspended 18 years of her sentence in favor of supervised probation. The remaining 12 years will be served with the Indiana Department of Correction. She is currently at the Rockville Correctional Facility.
Roberts and boyfriend Mitchel Shue, the baby’s father, were accused of shaking or hitting Demetri Shue repeatedly, causing retinal bleeding, bruises, a subdural hematoma, damage throughout the child’s brain, and a bruised thigh, according to court records.
Police and emergency medical personnel were called to the couple’s Thorntown apartment Jan. 20, 2016. The boy was taken to the Witham Hospital emergency room, then transferred to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, Indianapolis, where he died Jan. 23, 2016.
Shue pleaded guilty earlier this year to neglect of a dependent, and was sentenced to 465 days in the Boone County Jail, which he had already served. He also pleaded guilty to maintaining a common nuisance and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia and was scheduled to be released from jail on those charges this month.
