ZIONSVILLE – The Zionsville boys lacrosse team is ready to hit the field this weekend.
The team has been putting in the work in practice, and will get an opportunity to showcase their skills for the first time on Saturday at Crown Point.
“I love our senior leadership so far,” Zionsville head coach James Rundle said. “We have a large senior group and they are very bought in to what we want to do. This is one of the more confident teams that we have had going into the season, and we will have a good litmus test of that on Saturday.”
Rundle is back as head coach of the team after stepping aside last year to focus on his family.
He said things have gone well so far in his return.
“At times, it feels like we haven’t missed a beat, and some other times it feels like we are playing a little catch-up,” he said. “I definitely stand by my decision to spend more time with my family last year, but going to senior night last year and talking to some of the players that have come through the program, that was the turning point. We aren’t playing that much catch-up as much as we are re-acclimating.”
Rundle said he was going to keep the team’s goals internal, but the big thing he wants from this group is to take ownership of the team and do whatever they can to reach those goals.
The Eagles lost a couple of key players to graduation, but return a large portion of their team from a year ago.
“Our defense is looking pretty strong right now,” Rundle said. “We are anchored by three seniors and a senior goaltender. I think that is the biggest strength right now, and we will see how the rest comes together.”
The Eagles will face off with Crown Point starting at 10 a.m.
They have road games against Brebeuf and South Oldham next week, before having the home opener on March 28 against Fishers.
