PHILADELPHIA – Zionsville’s Kennedy Merrell earned All-American honors at the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia on Friday.

Merrell placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing 11-feet-11.75-inches in the competition. The top-6 finishers earn All-American status.

Merrell cleared 10-feet-8-inches on her first attempt. She missed her first attempts at 11-1.75, 11-7.75 and 11-11.75, but cleared on her second attempts.

The bar was then raised to 12-3.75, which would have been a personal best, and she couldn’t clear it.

Merrell wasn’t the only local athlete to compete in the New Balance Nationals on Friday.

Zionsville’s Sophia Yovanovich placed 32nd in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.22.

Lebanon’s Hunter Crew placed 21st in the discus, throwing 147-feet-7-inches.

Crew will compete at the Adidas Nationals on Sunday.
