Zionsville and Lebanon competed in the girls swimming sectional prelimis at Avon, Thursday.

The Lady Eagles had eight first place qualifier, and 26 competitors qualify for the sectional finals on Saturday. Lebanon did not have any finals qualifiers, but did have five swimmers qualify for the consolation finals.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Zionsville’s Alex Brennan qualified first, while her teammates Leighann Mattson and Elizabeth Mercer qualified fifth and sixth, respectively. Lebanon’s Cayla Tait qualified for the consolation finals.

The Lady Eagles’ MacKenzie Berger qualified first in the 200 individual medley. Zionsville’s Julie Mitchell qualified seventh, and Mallory Jones was 10th. In the 50 freestyle, Zionsville’s Katie Newcomer came in second, while her teammates Rachel Bewley and Anna Chapman finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Zionsville’s Arielle Coy set a sectional record with a time of 0:59.70 in the 100 butterfly. Berger qualified third, and Zionsville’s Amanda Kernodle qualified seventh.

Brennan gave the Lady Eagles yet another first place qualification in the 100 freestyle. Bewley qualified third, and teammate Anna Kirby was fourth. Mattson finished third in the 500 freestyle, while Mercer finished seventh, and Mitchell finished eighth.

Newcomer finished first in the 100 backstroke. Coy qualified in the third spot, and Jones finished fourth. Tait qualified for the consolation meet for Lebanon.

Zionsville’s Lexie Stewart qualified second in the 100 breaststroke, while teammate Casey Smitson finished seventh.

The Lady Eagles also finished first in each relay event. The team of Jones, Stewart, Coy, and Chapman qualified first in the 200 medley relay. Brennan, Bewley, Kirby, and Chapman were first in the 200 freestyle relay. Finally the 400 freestyle relay team of Bewley, Mercer, Chapman, and Brennan finished first.

All three of Lebanon’s relay teams qualified for the consolation finals. The 200 medley team of Tait, Joelynn Smith, Bailey Seppel, and Mallory Howard qualified. The 200 freestyle team of Smith, Howard, Natalie Coronado, and Kendra Dennis qualified. The 400 freestyle team of Tait, Coronado, Seppel, and Dennis also qualified for the Saturday event.

The diving prelims begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, with swimming and diving finals scheduled for 1 p.m. at Avon High School.
